Video Walkthrough Of Virgin?s New Project iPad Magazine

Virgin's somewhat highly-anticipated Project iPad magazine went live early this morning. Its focus is on "design, entertainment, technology, entrepreneurs" and its format is kin to other attempts at next-generation magazines, though I'd say this one is more successful. Of course, it requires an iPad with 4.2 to enjoy, and while five or six million of those have been sold, not everybody will get a chance to check this thing out. So I put together a little video walkthrough for you guys.

Two Kinects join forces to create better 3D video, blow our minds (video)

Remember when Oliver Kreylos impressed and shocked us by showing that a single Microsoft Kinect could create some remarkably stout 3D video? He's back at it again, this time blowing minds and demonstrating that two Kinects can be paired and their output meshed -- one basically filling in the gaps of the other. He found that the two do create some interference, the dotted IR pattern of one causing some holes and blotches in the other, but when the two are combined they basically help each other out and the results are quite impressive. As you can see in the video after the break, Oliver is able to rotate the camera perspective and basically film himself from a new camera angle that exists somewhere in between the position of the two Kinects, and do-so in real-time. Sure, the quality leaves a lot to be desired, but still. Wow.

Ubuntu One client for Windows goes beta

One knock against Canonical's Ubuntu One sync service is the fact that clients for other operating systems aren't available. That gives Dropbox a pretty big edge at the moment -- though Canonical has taken one huge step toward leveling the playing field with the release of a beta Ubuntu One app for Windows.

OMG! Ubuntu has gotten beta access already and shared a handful of screenshots. Ubuntu One for Windows offers a very similar experience to its Linux cousin, though right now now it can only sync your main Ubuntu One folder. Support for other folders, contacts, notes, and bookmarks is on the way.

You'll need to sign up on this page with the email address you used to create your Ubuntu One account. Once that's done, it's just a matter of waiting patiently for your invite.

Firefox Friday: a round-up of this week's Firefox releases and news

Stop! Stop your Friday afternoon it's-only-two-hours-until-weekend procrastination! Focus on this tab for just a moment because I have a lot to tell you. We've covered so much Firefox news this week that you can't possibly have read it all. You need this round-up like you need a Friday beer.

Enough waffling... let's rock.

Firefox 4 Beta 7 has been released for Windows, Mac and Linux

Almost two months late, Mozilla finally squeezed out the first feature-complete Firefox 4 Beta. Beyond the fact that FF4 has a staggering number of new features, it's not clear why the browser is slipping so behind schedule. Still, if everything goes to plan, we should see three more beta releases followed by a release candidate around February or March.

If you haven't yet tried out Firefox 4, now's the time to take it for a spin. There are still plenty of rough edges, but my guide should walk you through most of the cool new features. Most importantly, thanks to the inclusion of a suped-up JavaScript engine in this new build, you'll quickly notice that FF4 is now as fast as Google Chrome.
