Apple will take 30% of subscription fees from content-based apps like Hulu, Netflix

Apple has just announced that its recurring subscription plans will not only be available to magazine-type apps. Any content-based app, such as Hulu, Netflix or Spotify will be able to take advantage of Apple's App Store billing system.

The plot thickens, though: Apple has mandated that all content-based subscription services must enable in-app sign-up. In other words, if Hulu Plus is available for $7.99 from the Hulu website, users must also be able to sign up via the Hulu iOS app.

Apple, of course, will take its usual 30% cut of all subscriptions that originate from within iOS apps.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer shows up wearing Honeycomb to CeBIT (video)

Here's a trend we can get behind: ASUS and others are remixing existing, yet-to-be-released Android tablets with Honeycomb where it makes sense to do so. The Eee Pad MeMO, for instance, is now being promised with a Qualcomm port of the platform in time for its June launch -- and along those same lines, the company is showing its Eee Pad Transformer here at CeBIT with a Honeycomb upgrade. Unlike the MeMO, the Transformer is just a straight Tegra 2 setup like the already-launched Xoom, which is likely why they were able to get it loaded on here and functioning relatively well in time for the show. The build ASUS has here doesn't appear to be final -- the Android Market is missing, for example -- but what was there seemed to be running smoothly; considering the internals, we'd expect no less. Follow the break for video (pardon the lack of audio -- there was some talking going on that we found distracting).

Twitpic introduces video support, lets you tweet your vids

twitpic video
Twitpic, the Twitter photo-posting service, has now extended its reach into photos that move, also known as "video". Users will now be able to upload quick videos shot on the move, and share them directly with Twitter.

Twitter's Web interface currently only shows a thumbnail of the video, but Twitpic says it's working on embedding the actual video into Twitter. Right now it basically looks like a link, not much different than posting a simple YouTube link.

One difference between Twitpic video support and plain old YouTube however, is that users are able to e-mail their videos in, rather than just uploading them from the site. Once applications using Twitpic start integrating this new functionality, users will be able to upload video right from within their favorite Twitter client, on the go.

While this sort of functionality has been attempted before by 12seconds, we can only hope Twitpic's video space endeavor meets with better luck.

Further proof that Android apps are slated to run on the BlackBerry PlayBook

It's nothing we haven't heard before, the BlackBerry PlayBook is said to be able to run Android applications. But up until now we have never really had documented proof of this. During Mobile World Congress this month, during a hands on with the device one of the employees seemed to have slipped up and stated "we'll also support Android apps," which is pretty big. (Or they read the blog rumors, we gather.) Interesting none the less to see some cross platform Android applications, would certainly open the doors to plenty of new developers and ultimately can help strengthen the Android platform even further. Chrome Web Store opens to international devs

The Chrome Web Store has had somewhat limited developer access since its launch back in December of 2010. Soon, however, international developers will be able to submit Web apps for sale in Google's open-but-closed Web marketplace. Fifteen additional countries have been added to the developer dashboard, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.

While international developer access is great, Chrome users in those countries aren't going to benefit from the expansion for some time. Google says the consumer launch isn't going to happen until later this year. Developers will also be able to price apps they want to sell via Chrome Web Store Payments (powered by Google Checkout), but won't actually be able to register for a merchant account yet.

Oh, what a tangled Web... Store!

YouTube Ad Blitz 2011 lets you watch, share and rate Super Bowl ads

youtubeadblitz2011
While I'm not a huge sports fan, I can appreciate a good ad when I see one; and the Super Bowl sometimes feels like it's as much about the ads as it is about the sport.

YouTube Ad Blitz is an official YouTube channel going strong since 2007, with over 21 million channel views. It shows all Super Bowl commercials, uploaded instantly once they're broadcast in-game. Saw an ad you liked? Now you can watch it again! Better yet, the channel makes it super-easy to share ads with friends who missed them during the game.

A big part of the fun is being able to vote for your favorite commercials; it's actually an official contest, with rules written up by lawyers and all. The contest goes on until Feb 14th, and you can vote as you watch, using the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons on each video.

At any rate, contest or no contest, this is a beautiful showcase of the latest and greatest in advertising.

A Baby Was Trapped Inside a Time-Locked Bank Vault By Herself [Crazy]

In Georgia, a 14-month-old toddler wandered away from her mother inside a bank. Crazy, I know. What's even crazier is that the baby managed to walk inside an open bank vault that locked as the bank closed (and wouldn't open again until the bank opened). After cameras spotted the baby on security cameras inside the vault, the mother realized that her kid was trapped inside. More »

Ubuntu 11.04 Unity keyboard shortcuts have a distinct Windows 7 flavor

ubuntu-unity
Ubuntu's new Unity interface already drew some raised eyebrows because of its looks, which are arguably similar to the Windows 7 taskbar. Now, the Ask Ubuntu site has posted a list of Unity keyboard shortcuts -- and those take a cue from Windows 7 as well.
  • The super key, which typically refers to the Windows key on most standard keyboards, invokes the Unity Launcher -- on Windows, this would call up the Start Menu
  • Super + 1/2/3, etc. launches the app in that position on the Unity dockbar -- much like the Windows 7 feature
  • Super + D minimizes and restores all windows -- a hotkey combo in Windows since XP
So why the similarities? If you're trying to steal away desktop market share from the dominant operating system, it's not going to hurt if you make it easy for power users to get comfortable on your alternative OS. By implementing familiar keyboard shortcuts in Unity, Canonical is no doubt giving Windows users an Eric Idle style nudge in the ribs and saying, "C'mon, give us a try!"

With WUBI making it so easy to install and dual-boot Ubuntu from within Windows and an easy profile data import tool offered during setup, Canonical is doing its best to entice defectors.

Your Brain on Cellphones: Effects Present, Consequences Unknown

An issue that periodically makes its way into public discourse -- the impact and possible dangers to brain development and health posed by the ubiquitous use of cellphones -- is being revisited thanks to a newly published scientific study in JAMA. However, rather than offering any definitive answers, the new research, led by Nora D. Volkow of the National Institutes of Health, raises more questions.

Mac OS X Lion: the multi-touch offspring of Windows 7 and iOS

Windows 7 OS X Lion
Yesterday, Apple released the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion, the first major update to OS X since August 2009. Two major things have uprooted the computing world since then: the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, and the iPad in 2010.

It's no surprise, then, that OS X Lion looks like the lovechild of Windows 7 and iOS. White box-thumping purists will claim, somehow, that this is revolutionary, world-changing, pivotal. Realists will acknowledge that, for the first time in at least a decade, Apple might be following Microsoft's lead.

Hyperbole aside, though, we should be excited: more than anything, OS X Lion is a glimpse of the future of tablet computing.

Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo coming 'in a few weeks'

firefoxJay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of products, has told the IDG News Service at the Mobile World Congress that Firefox 4 for Android will ship in a few weeks. We should expect to see one more beta version this week, and then the final build soon after.

Sullivan also tells IDG about Firefox for Mobile's extensive feature set -- 150 add-ons will be available! -- and Mozilla's overall move to a faster, quarterly release cycle.

Android already has a lot of competent browsers, but an HTML5-rendering, hardware-accelerated and sync-enabled offering would blow the rest of the competition out of the water.

Firefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9

Not one to let it lie (yes, Asa, we're looking at you), Mozilla's Technical Evangelist, Paul Rouget, has produced a fancy infographic that details just how much ass Firefox 4 kicks in comparison to IE9. If you're in a hurry, here's the summary: FIREFOX RULES; IE9 SUX. For detailed analysis, read on.

For the most part Rouget relies in Firefox's pure, numerical superiority, rather than real-world use cases. Firefox 4 supports more of the HTML5 and CSS3 standards. Firefox implements almost the entire JavaScript API, as opposed to IE9's mediocre 48%. Firefox supports more Web technologies. To really drive it home, the infographic even shows how Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 are superior to Microsoft's latest offering.

Don't be mesmerized by the tawdry typography, though: with juicy propaganda it's always what isn't said that matters. There is no mention of IE9's hyperspeed JavaScript engine, Chakra. There's no mention of pinned tabs or per-process tabs or Tracking Protection Lists. It feels a bit like a scrawny, bespectacled geek throwing stones at a fat billionaire with three trophy wives -- the nerd is probably right, but the pimp doesn't really care.

There's no doubt that Firefox 4 implements a broader range of Web technologies -- and don't get us wrong, it is an excellent browser -- but more stuff doesn't necessarily equate to better stuff. You can do a lot more with a pick-up truck than a Ferrari, but choosing which one you want to drive isn't necessarily an easy decision

Banshee media player for Windows goes alpha

banshee audio video player windows
Banshee has been one of the top Linux media players for ages, and now the venerable audio and video app has officially made its way to Windows. The first alpha release of Banshee for Windows is now available for download, and it's exactly what you would expect: it's very true to the Linux experience, and it's got a few kinks which still need working out before it's ready for prime time on Windows.

Like any good media player, Banshee offers features like smart playlist, podcast, audiobook, and online radio support, ID3 tag editing, song ratings, track information lookup, full screen mode, system tray playback controls, and toast notifications.

Unfortunately, it's still rather rough around the edges. Banshee's Last.fm features and equalizer caused numerous crashes, and the app eventually quit trying to play tracks after a handful of restarts. Rebooting Windows was the only way to get Banshee playing again.

Still, this is just the first alpha release! We're sure that things will improve quickly with future builds.
